At the ball last week, Darcy wouldn't dance with Elizabeth Bennett. Apparently Elizabeth was highly offended by Mr. Darcy’s rudeness: “Elizabeth told me she would never again want to dance with Fitzwilliam Darcy. She thinks he is just too proud of be the slightest bit likeable.”
We originally wondered if Elizabeth would be able to stick to this claim. In the social events after the ball, Mr. Darcy is showing himself to be increasingly attracted to Elizabeth, but it looks like Elizabeth will be staying strong in her determination to avoid Mr. Darcy. At the Lucas’ recent party, Sir William attempted to get Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy to dance together, and Elizabeth refused.
This didn’t appear to slow down Mr. Darcy, as he later declared to Miss Bingley that Miss Elizabeth Bennett was now the object of his affections. And what was that that flickered across Miss Bingley’s face when he told her this? To us it looked like a flicker of disappointment. Perhaps Miss Bingley is attempting to pursue Mr. Darcy. Watch out Elizabeth- could be competition!
